Thumbnail

The still image that, with the title, determines whether anyone clicks.

On long-form platforms it does most of the work of distribution. It is a promise about content, and a thumbnail that overstates what the video delivers costs more in retention than it gains in clicks.

Short-form has no equivalent — the first frame plays that role, which is why hooks matter more there than packaging does.

Formats where this matters most

  • Listicle / RankingA set number of enumerated items, each an originally scripted beat, usually counted down.
  • Challenge / ExperimentA self-imposed rule or constraint, and the video is whether it holds up.
